What it is

Neurotoxin treatment for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) targets the overactive jaw muscles that contribute to clenching, grinding, and tension. By easing this activity, the treatment can relieve discomfort and protect the teeth. In some clients with very strong jaw muscles, it may also gradually soften a square or bulky jawline

How it works

Neurotoxin is placed in small, precise doses into the masseter muscles along the jaw. These muscles are responsible for chewing and clenching. By reducing their overactivity, the treatment eases tension and pain while still allowing normal function.

What to expect

  • We’ll review your history of clenching, grinding, or jaw pain and identify areas of tension through a combination of exam and conversation.

  • Treatment involves a series of quick injections placed into the masseter muscles on each side of the jaw. Most clients describe the sensation as mild pinching or pressure that passes quickly.

  • You can return to daily activity right away. Some clients notice temporary tenderness, tightness, or mild chewing fatigue in the first week. Relief typically begins within several days and continues to improve over the first month.

Frequently asked questions

  • No — only the overactive portion of the jaw muscle is relaxed. Normal chewing and speaking remain unaffected.

  • Most clients enjoy relief for 3–4 months. With consistent treatments, results may last longer.

  • For some, reduced masseter activity softens a square or bulky jawline, creating a more tapered look. This is a natural side effect and can be part of the benefit.

  • Yes. Neurotoxin has been safely used for TMJ and related conditions for years. Regular treatments are well tolerated.

  • While neurotoxin for TMJ can be medically indicated, coverage varies and many clinics treat it as an out-of-pocket service. SkinAve does not accept insurance, but we’ll review expected costs with you in advance so everything is clear.
